Course Overview

 

This is a practical course for people who enjoy art making. All you need is an interest and a willingness to create and keep creating.

In level one you will develop skills in drawing and wet media based around a theme of identity, culture and/or place. We will learn from established artists with a focus on painting and an option for printmaking.

Level two explores painting techniques and conventions. You will choose a theme to sustain a body of work that evolves as you learn from artist models and develop your style.

Year 11 students not taking NCEA are able to enrol in this course. For those who are - it is assessed at L1 and 2

Kia ora, my name is Angela McAlpine and I am excited to be offering this course in Visual Arts. I have been teaching Visual Arts for 14 years, specialising in Painting but also teaching Senior Photography and Printmaking. I have also my own art practice in ceramics, mosty making organic forms. I am currently living at Kaka Point in the beautiful Catlins and enjoy living by the sea, cycling and playing the ukulele.

Course Details

Develop your drawing skills, learning how to draw from observation using a range of techniques and dry media.
Gain confidence using wet media developing skills in water colour, ink and acrylic paint.
Learn how artists use conventions to communicate their ideas and demonstrate some of this knowledge in your own work.
Explore and extend your ideas into a body of work based around a theme.

Your school should supply these resources for you; Access to a colour printer & photocopier, charcoal, oil pastels, chalk pastels, coloured pencils, black indian ink, watercolour paint, Chromacryl or A2 acrylic paint (white, black, cool yellow, cool red, cool blue), synthetic brushes, blu tack, double sided tape, masking tape, A3 230gsm wet strength paper, A3 black and brown paper, printmaking tools and materials, 2 x A1 Folio Boards per student for external assessment. You will need to provide; 1 x A3 drawing wallet/folder, 1 x A3 60 pg pad of 110/120gsm paper, HB & 6B pencils, black pen, pencil sharpener, eraser, 40cm ruler, glue stick,
