"Nailing Numeracy" - short course (29th May - 28th Aug)

a 12-week course designed to help Y12 and Y13 students meet the NCEA Level 1 Numeracy Co-requisite

Course Overview

Nailing Numeracy is a 12-week course designed to help Year 12 and 13 students meet the NCEA Level 1 Numeracy Co-requisite. In this course, ākonga (students) will develop essential mathematical skills and concepts to confidently tackle real-world problems. They will learn how to apply numeracy in practical contexts, from interpreting data and statistics to understanding patterns, shapes, and financial literacy.

Learning Goals
  • Fluently and flexibly solve problems that require operations on numbers, understanding the relative size of those numbers, and making sense of the answer in context.
  • Recognise and work with mathematical relationships.
  • Understand and use the spatial properties and representations of objects.
  • Understand and use systems for location and navigation.
  • Use numbers and units to measure and express attributes of objects and events as quantities, with a degree of precision appropriate to the context.
  • Understand and reason with statistics and data.
  • Use probability to interpret situations that involve elements of chance.

Kelvin ha been an online teacher, teaching Physics for OtagoNet/NetNZ, since it started in 2002. Interests include as a volunteer firefighter, an ambulance officer and supporting an outdoor education centre in the East Matukituki (Mt Aspiring National Park). Kelvin is a part-time teacher of Mathematics, Physics & OE at the Tokomairiro. My hometown is Naseby, 2000 feet above worry level. The Maniototo is a high-country plain, through which both the Central Otago Rail Trail & the Taieri River meander. I work in Milton, South Otago, living at the Fire Station.
