Senior Earth and Space Science

This course investigates the dynamic systems that shape our planet and beyond

Course Overview

Course Overview

This course investigates the dynamic systems that shape our planet and beyond — from Earth’s changing surface and atmosphere to the origins and structure of the universe. Students develop scientific inquiry skills, explore current research and technologies, and apply science to real-world environmental and space contexts.

The course integrates Earth processes, astronomy, climate science, and human impacts, supporting students to think critically about global and cosmic systems. It aligns with NCEA Level 2 and 3 Earth and Space Science achievement standards and can lead into tertiary study in environmental science, geology, meteorology, astronomy, or space technology.

Course Aims

Students will:

  • Develop understanding of the interconnected Earth and space systems.

  • Investigate scientific models explaining natural phenomena on Earth and in space.

  • Evaluate the impact of human activity on Earth systems and consider sustainable responses.

  • Engage with contemporary scientific research, technology, and data.

  • Communicate scientific ideas effectively through inquiry, analysis, and discussion.

Key Strands (NZC Alignment)

  • Planet Earth and Beyond: Earth systems, the universe, and human impact.

  • Nature of Science: Understanding science, investigating, communicating, and participating.

  • Science Capabilities: Gather and interpret evidence, critique evidence, use evidence, interpret representations, and engage with science.
