NCEA L3 Media Studies

Course Overview

 

Students will gain insight as both creators and consumers of media, including film, print, radio, television and the web. The course will explore how groups in society are represented in the media and how meaning is conveyed in media texts, as well as investigate media technologies. There will be a mixture of theory and practical work, with an emphasis on film and print. This course  includes: research into the impacts of significant developments in media industries, a project where students will propose, design, write and produce EITHER a multi-page magazine spread that demonstrates an understanding of the conventions of print journalism and layout OR a 3-6 minute coming-of-age short film,  study of the digital shift and its impact on media industries eg the  global music industry,  social media, film  industries etc, and/or a close study of a director and their work (optional).

Study and apply, media language and media texts.
Explore and evaluate how technology informs media.

Social Sciences
12 credits in NCEA Level 2 Media Studies or English, including 4 credits gained through external assessment. NOTE: This course has a strong written component. Students considering Level 3 Media Studies should be comfortable with essay writing.
