Course Overview

Course Description:

In Echoes of Antiquity: Power, Identity and Legacy in Classical Greece and Rome you will explore the ideas and values of the Classical Worlds of Greece and Rome. Throughout the course we will examine the concepts of citizenship and society, culture and identity, empire and power, art and aesthetics, conflict, and heritage using a thematic approach. The emphasis is on gaining an understanding of both Greece and Rome through literature and historical writings, archaeological evidence, art and architecture. We will study the societies of the Greeks and Romans, the socio-political structures together with the literature and art these societies produced and the people that emerged, together with the ways in which they have shaped the world we live in today.

The five themes covered include:

 

  • Defining the Classical World: Chronology, Geography and Sources.

  • Power: Who Holds It and How?
  • Identity, Belief and Daily Life.
  • Society, Identity and Daily Realities.
  • Conflict, Legacy and Synthesis.

Course Details

Be able to compare and contrast the two key societies of the Classical World (Greece and Rome), together with the influence they had on later societies.
Be able to work independently and collaboratively with a range of people.
Be able to critically engage with primary source materials.
Be able to craft perceptive written responses supported by specific evidence.
