Japanese Language Studies (NCEA L1 - Japanese)

Course Overview

In learning Japanese, students learn to communicate in an additional language, develop the capacity to learn further languages and explore different world views in relation to their own. (New Zealand Curriculum- Learning Languages) This course integrates the core strands of language knowledge, communication and cultural knowledge. This course consolidates topics studied from year 9 and 10.Students should be able to understand more complex language and communicate beyond the immediate context e.g. past and future events and can understand and produce a variety of text types.

Topics covered include:

 

  • Whakawhanaungatanga - building relationships and establishing connections

  • talking about yourself, who you are, where you are from, your town

  • Manaakitanga - how you care for each other, the well-being of your community, engaging with one another and maintaining strong relationships.

  • Family and descriptions

  • Your school

  • Travel 

  • Hauora

  • Leisure Time, hobbies and sport

Sara Lake has been teaching since 2002. The past few years she has taught level 1 Japanese online through NetNZ. She is a registered teacher at Marian College. Subjects she teaches are Japanese, Social Studies and Tourism. Sara Lake lived in Japan for a year as an AFS student and worked as a Japanese speaking guide for nine years prior to becoming a teacher. She loves watching her children play football and futsal, reading and walking her dogs.

Demonstrate understanding of spoken Japanese related to everyday contexts. (listening).

Languages
At least a full year of Japanese study with an understanding of basic sentence patterns. Ability to read Hiragana in words and sentences and recognise most KatakanaKnowledge of Japanese up to level 4 of the New Zealand Curriculum.

Practical Components - Spoken presentation to be recorded $25 for Language Perfect for vocabulary learning. (optional) Yatto ii kanji book by Sarah Perkins and Yoshitaka Sasai $15 (optional) Textbook/workbook- Iitomo textbook and student workbook ($30)tbc. These will be issued by teacher and then invoiced to school for workbook and textbook to be returned at the end of the course.
