An introduction to Asian cultures and customs, and Japanese and Korean languages

Course Overview

This is an introduction to Asian cultures and customs, with a taster of Japanese and Korean language learning. Students will learn about the people and families, homes and lifestyles, festivals and food of these cultures. Language learning will be integrated through the course. Students will experience Asian culture in the classroom, community and in an online exchange with students from Japan and Korea.

 

This course is an inquiry-based learning programme in which students build their comprehension, critical thinking and communication skills. Through traditional cultural practices in Japan and Korea, students will explore their own and others identity, culture, and languages.

 

Expected Learning Time: 2hr per week (for one term) - a 40 min weekly VC (using Google Meet); AND about 90 minutes supported self study (using an online learning environment).

The support of the learner's classroom teacher is recommended.

Sue Kim has been teaching Korean, Japanese, and Digital Technology in New Zealand for 20 years. She is originally from Busan, Korea, but has been living in New Zealand since 1996. Ms. Kim is a Martial Arts expert and is experienced in Kung Fu, Tae-Kwon-Do, and is currently training in Karate on a regular basis as well as competing, judging, and refereeing at National competitions. She also loves tramping, walking, and running.

Midori Sasaki is a fully trained and registered teacher of Japanese language. She was born and educated in her country, Japan. It has been considerably advantaged to her 27 years teaching at Southland Boys’ High School and last 10 years, she has added the skill of teaching online. She has assisted the Drama and Debating teacher in competition outside her teaching, this experience has given her further knowledge and insight in her teaching of Japanese.
