Why we do what we do, an exploration of human behaviour.
This is an inquiry-based course that will cover fascinating and ethically questionable psychological studies from the past, what made these studies important, and the impact they have on society today. By comparing different approaches within the field of psychology, students will investigate what it is that makes us behave the way we do. Students will explore how psychology is applied in practice in their choice of fields, including forensic, health, sport, developmental, cultural, clinical and more. We will cover biological, behavioural, cognitive, psychodynamic and sociocultural psychology, to try to find out how our genetic heritage and social environment interact. Students will investigate several issues present in modern psychology such as gender and cultural bias and the use of children and animals in research. Specific focus areas for each topic and assessments contexts will be negotiated between participating students and the teacher to accommodate for student interest.

Kia ora, hello, I'm Madeline Campbell. I live near Lake Brunner just outside Māwhera Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. I've been in education for 26 years, teaching in secondary schools in South and Central Auckland and the West Coast. I grew up in Central Otago and studied in Dunedin. I've taught lots of subjects, mainly visual arts and social science fields. I completed my Masters study in Arts Psychotherapy, and I'm interested in human consciousness and expression, and how people make sense of reality. I taught printmaking at Toi Ora Live Art Trust in Central Auckland, an inclusive creative space for people experiencing mental health challenges. I also have some Positive Psychology training for a wellbeing in education programme. I live on a property with my partner half covered in native bush and beech forest with wild deer and pigs running around, a river full of trout running along the bottom of the property, tonnes of native birds, as well as chooks, ducks, a kunekune pig, goats, some calves, a few horses, and a dog and cat. I love horse riding, tai chi, being outside, and making art when I can. I have four step-daughters aged from 17 to 23. This year, I’m working mostly from home for 4 days a week for NetNZ, teaching two psychology classes, and supporting NetNZ teaching with their online teaching. My school base is South Westland Area School in Hari Hari.
